"I just think if David Burd was in a black person's body and had come up with that idea, he would've pulled it off. That's my issue with that type of angle," says Dicky. Dicky denies the connection: "I haven't seen any white person pull that off prior to me. Still, Dicky remains defensive when asked whether he thinks his privilege as a white male helps him succeed. While African Americans are disproportionally jailed and stereotypically criminalized by a racist society, Dicky's ability to talk his way into homes for a music video seems markedly tied to his race. I care more about respect." And undoubtedly guest appearances from Fetty Wap, Rich Homie Quan and Snoop cannot come cheap, with rappers often charging tens of thousands per verse. "Money doesn't drive me in the slightest," says Dicky. But while his Santa Monica rent used to be just $1,300 in a two-bedroom shared with his manager, it has since increased (Dicky won't share how much.) He also says he reinvests all his earnings back into music and does not have a set percent he saves each month. Dicky says much of that money was spent on his 2015 debut album and, of course, videos.
